Trip Overview

Helambu valley trekking is a short trek which is close to Kathmandu valley and is a relatively low altitude trek that is ideal for all age groups and ability levels. The Helambu trek is starts with a short but stunning drive from Kathmandu to Sundarijal. This trekking takes place into the Shivapuri National Park and begins with a trek through the dense forest of the park until you reach Chisopani at 2,194 meters. From here, the panoramic view of the Himalayan Mountains is breathtaking. From Chisopani, the trek continues to Langtang National Park with visits to the villages of Kutumsang, Tharepati, Melamchighyang, Tarkeghyang, Shermathang and Melamchipul Bazaar to experience the unique lifestyles of the highland people. The highest point on this trek is Tharepati-La Pass at 3,680 meters and is known to be covered in snow if you are trekking during the winter months. The final leg of the treks takes us to Melamchipul Bazaar, on the bank of the Indrawati River, from where a five hours drive to Kathmandu. The forests of Helambu region of Langtang National Park are a pristine example of temperate and sub alpine vegetation. The dense oaks, rhododendron, dyfneys and pine forests on the trail lead the spectacular views will inspire you on this Himalayan adventure. The mountain views are awesome from Chisopani, Kutumsang, Tharepati and Sermathang!

    Arrival in Kathmandu (1,350 m)

    Sightseeing in Kathmandu.

  • Day 3

    Leave Kathmandu and Trek to Chisapani (2,165 m/5-6 hrs).

  • Day 4

    Trek from Chisapani to Kutumsang (2,470 m/6-7 hrs).

  • Day 5

    Trek from Kutumsang to Tharepati (3,690 m/ 5 -5:30 hrs).

  • Day 6

    Trek from Tharepati to Melamchi Gaon / Melamchi Ghyang (2,530 m/ 4 hrs).

  • Day 7

    Trek Melamchi Gaon to Tarkeghyang (2,600 m/ 4 hrs).

  • Day 8

    Trek from Tarkeghyang to Shermathang (2,590 m/4 hrs).

  • Day 9

    Trek Shermathang to Melamchi Pul Bazaar (870 m).

  • Day 10

    10: Drive to Kathmandu (1,350 m/ 5 hrs) by public/local bus.

Detailed Itinerary

  • Day 1

    Arrival in Kathmandu (1,350 m)

    Upon your arrival in Kathmandu airport, our airport representative meets you and then transfers you to a centrally located 3-star hotel in Kathmandu. The evening is free to explore the city.
  • Day 2

    Sightseeing in Kathmandu.

    After breakfast, our professional tour guide accompanies you on a sightseeing tour of Kathmandu Valley, on this tour you will visit most of the major UNESCO heritage sites including Swayambhunath, Hanumandhoka Palace, Pashupatinath and Bouddhanath, all of these are located less than 6 km from one another.
  • Day 3

    Leave Kathmandu and Trek to Chisapani (2,165 m/5-6 hrs).

    We drive by private vehicle from Kathmandu hotel to Sundarijal, the trekking starts point, near by a small Hydro Power Plant & draining water supply dam. The trail passes through the Shivpuri watershed and wildlife reserve & recently promoted to National park, which is the newest & smallest National Park in Nepal! The first settlement you will come across is Mulkharka with Tamang inhabitants. The route heads ups the ridge through a forest of oaks and rhododendron to Chisopani. It has magnificent views of Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, Langtang, Rolwaling, Mt. Dorje Lapka, Gaurishankar, Sishapangma and many more.
  • Day 4

    Trek from Chisapani to Kutumsang (2,470 m/6-7 hrs).

    The trail continues to drop from Chisopani on a good, sometimes level, trail that crosses meadows and fields. You will then descend through Pati Bhanjyang, level walk for an hour & steep ascend to Joginidanda passing by Chipling village (2,170 m) probably the lunch sport. A gradual descend from Jogini Danda to Gul Bhanjyang (2,130 m). The trail climbs the ridge from Gul Bhanjyang to another pass at 2,620 meters. The meadow makes a good camping spot, and it is downhill to Kutumsang at 2,470 m in a saddle atop the ridge.
  • Day 5

    Trek from Kutumsang to Tharepati (3,690 m/ 5 -5:30 hrs).

    The trek continues North up the Yurin Danda ridge and offers splendid views of the mountain peaks. The trail climbs above Kutumsang on a steep, eroded trail mostly through fir, oaks and rhododendron forest where there are no permanent settlements. The trail then descends to Magengoth. After lunch at Mangengoth, you have to climb steeply at first then more gradually; the trail makes some ups and downs passing through the forest, across flower strewn meadows and crossing streams. You will reach Tharepati which consists of a few goths and lodges.
  • Day 6

    Trek from Tharepati to Melamchi Gaon / Melamchi Ghyang (2,530 m/ 4 hrs).

    From Tharepati, the trail steeply descends through pine and rhododendron forests with good views down into the Helambu valley and across to Jugal Himal and Numbur in the Solu Khumbu. Melamchi Gaon is surrounded by beautiful forests, and is mainly inhabited by Sherpa people with their distinctive culture. There are also some Buddhist monasteries to visit along the way.
  • Day 7

    Trek Melamchi Gaon to Tarkeghyang (2,600 m/ 4 hrs).

    The early part of the trek, steep descends until you cross Melamchi Khola( stream)/ 1,900m. Then after, you trek gently up to Tarkeghyang passing through Sherpa settlements. Tarkeghyang is a beautiful Sherpa village with one of the oldest and biggest monasteries along the trail.
  • Day 8

    Trek from Tarkeghyang to Shermathang (2,590 m/4 hrs).

    Today, the trail is quite easier through flat land with beautiful forests along the way. The trek continues crossing some small streams on the way. There is also a beautiful village situated halfway to Shermathang is called Ghangyul (2,770 m). To add the experience we will also visit another unique and beautiful Sherpa village where we can visit many ancient monasteries. There you can see the Jugal Himal range to the North of Shermathang village.
  • Day 9

    Trek Shermathang to Melamchi Pul Bazaar (870 m).

    The trail gradually descends all the way to Melamchipul Bazaar through meadows and cultivated fields. On the way, we come across several old villages with their own unique traditions. The trek today day is quite pleasant with mountain views and interactions with many local and friendly people.
  • Day 10

    10: Drive to Kathmandu (1,350 m/ 5 hrs) by public/local bus.

    You travel through gravel and up a bumpy path to zero Km and then you follow the pitched road/blacktopped road all the way to Kathmandu by passing by Panchkhal, Dhulikhel, Banepa & Bhaktapur.
  • Day 11

    Airport transfer

    We transfer you to the airport at the appropriate time for your ongoing journey. Note: If you wishes/wanted Private Vehicle from Melamchi Pul Bazaar - Kathmandu / Staying overnight at Dhulikhel Resorts, the cost will add in this itinerary.
